- The collection contains fragments of the semi-official correspondence of Döme Sztójay, Prime Minister of the government appointed by Regent Miklós Horthy after the Nazi occupation of Hungary at the end of March 1944. A substantial part of his correspondence concerns private issues, including inquiries to the prime minister.
- Archival history:
- A substantial part of the records were lost during World War II. The remaining parts were acquired by the Hungarian National Archives in 1948.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Döme Sztójay (1883-1946) was an army officer, diplomat and prime minister. Between 1935 and 1944 he served as Hungarian ambassador to Berlin. After the German occupation of Hungary on 19 March 1944, Regent Miklós Horthy appointed him prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, posts which he held from 22 March to 29 August 1944. An enthusiastic supporter of Nazi politics, Sztójay’s government orchestrated the plunder and deportation of the Hungarian Jews in the spring and summer of 1944. Due to Horthy’s plan to prepare a ceasefire, the pro-German Sztójay was deposed at the end of August. After the war he was sentenced to death and executed.
