- Scope and content:
- The collection holds the records of the General Director of the Budapest School District, the state official responsible for the control and supervision of secondary education in Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County. Presidential records (VI. 501.a.) mostly concern personnel and disciplinary matters of state and religious schools. General records (VI. 501.b.) are fragmented and are of little relevance, mostly concerning matters of military schools. VI. 501.c. holds qualification cards of secondary school teachers, mostly from the years 1937-1944. VI. 501.d. is a key provenance group within the collection, which holds statements on school leaving exams (érettségi vizsgálatok) of gymnasia and other institutes of secondary education from the years 1884-1944. State and religious secondary schools were key factors of Jewish integration in Hungary (and elsewhere in Europe). In the second half of the 19th century, Jewish pupils were largely over-represented among children attending secondary education. (31 vols., 1.8 linear metres). VI. 501.e. holds register books (anyakönyvek) of secondary schools for boys and girls (polgári iskolák) from 1935-1944. Register books contain the personal data of students, including address, religion and the names and occupations of their parents, the classes taught, names of instructors/teachers and the grades. (9 vols., 0.11 linear metres). VI. 501.f. holds yearbooks and report cards (értesítő) of teacher training schools, gymnasia and secondary schools for boys and girls from 1894-1943. The material also includes studies on the history of the schools. VI. 501.f. no. III. vols. 4, 6. 8, 10, and 16 are of particular relevance, holding the records of the Israelite secondary schools for boys and girls from Vác and Újpest from the years 1937-1943. (54 vols., 2 booklets, 4.04 linear metres). Another key part of the collection is VI. 501.h. that holds reports cards of gymnasia, vocational schools and secondary schools for boys and girls (A-C) from 1806-1949. Report cards (also referred to as yearbooks (évkönyvek)) included the brief history of the school, major events of the school year, name lists of teachers, timetables and the list of pupils. Besides the material of schools in Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County, the collection also holds records of schools from the territory annexed by Hungary after 1939, including the documents of Jewish schools in former Romanian and Czechoslovak cities, including Jewish Gymnasium of Kolozsvár, 1940-1941, and Israelite Mixed Gymnasium of Kolozsvár 1941-1942, the Munkács Jewish Gymnasium, 1940-1942, the Nagyvárad Dr. Lipót Kecskeméti Jewish Gymnasium, 1941-1942, as well one Jewish school from Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County: the Israelite mixed secondary school of Vác (Váci Izraelita Polgári Koedukált Leányiskola) 1939-1942. (36 boxes, 3.96 linear metres)
- Archival history:
- Based on the regulations of Decree 1022-38/1951 of the Minister of Education (modified by Decree 114-0820/1952), school records that were classified of historical value were taken to the archives in the 1950s and the early 1960s. After the dissolution of the general directorate of school districts in 1950, the material was handed over to the Pest County Archives. The most recent file in the collection is from 1960. The collection reached its present form at the end of the 1980s.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The institute of the general directorate of school districts (tankerületi főigazgatóság) was first established in Hungary by the Habsburg Empress Maria Theresia in 1777 (Ratio Educationis). The territory of Hungary was divided into nine school districts to supervise public education. According to Act XXX of 1883, the general director of school districts (tankerületi főigazgató) was a state official appointed by the Minister of Culture and Education to organise and control secondary education. Hungary was divided into 12 school districts, each headed by a general director, who was obliged to implement the decisions of the ministry, supervise educational activities and submit regular reports to the ministry about the results and state of all the institutes of secondary education. In 1918, the number of districts was increased to 13. The sphere of competence of the General Director of the Budapest Vicinity School District was Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County, Nógrád County and the city of Kecskemét.
