- Scope and content:
- The collection holds the surviving records of the Police Department of the town of Vác, mostly from 1944. Jewish-related cases are scattered throughout the material and include, but are not limited to, the following topics: permits and licenses of Jewish individuals and companies, extensions of permits and licenses, including events of communities and social organisations, citizenship and naturalisation cases, certificates and residence permits, documents pertaining to the conscription of Jews and the yellow star decree and many other anti-Jewish measures in April 1944, the confiscation of Jewish assets and the ghettoisation in May-June 1944, records of offences and violations of anti-Jewish laws and decrees and possibly cases of rescue and mitigation.
- Archival history:
- The records of the Police Department were probably evacuated from Vác in October/November 1944, when the front was approaching. The pre-1944 parts of the collection were most likely destroyed deliberately before evacuation. Only the index (mutatókönyv) from 1942 survived, which went missing later in the archives. After the war, the records were taken back to Vác and in the early 1950s they were taken to the Pest County Archives. The fonds reached its present form in 1981.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Police forces had been operating under the supervision of the municipal authorities before 1920, when the Hungarian Royal State Police was established (Act I of 1920, Governmental Decree no. 5047/1919). The police was the law enforcement agency to maintain order and persecute crime in the urban areas (cities and towns) of Hungary. The Police Department of Vác was created in 1920 and was supervised by the Budapest District Superintendent of Police until 1932 and the Provincial Superintendent of Police (vidéki főkapitány) between 1932 and 1944.
