The early records of the Mayor’s Office in Nagykőrös, a major city of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County, form a collection of key importance for exploring and describing the history of the Jewish communities from the establishment of the first Jewish institutions in town around 1848-1850 until 1872. The most important Jewish-related files are held in the following provenance groups:
V.243. a. Administrative records, 1848-1872. This series holds information on all segments of the lives of Jewish and non-Jewish citizens of Nagykőrös, including, but not limited to, taxation, fees, state monopolies, public order and police matters, public health, requests for trade and sales permits and buildings, contracts with shop- and inn keepers, requests and petitions by leaseholders, leases of market tents, matters of residence permits and naturalization, matters of violations of economic regulations, warrants of caption, conscription, exemption from military service and other duties, extabulatio and intabulatio (be- és kitáblázások) and other financial transactions, and magyarisations of names. Furthermore, the collection holds several records concerning Jewish communities, including the establishment of Jewish schools and organizations, appointments of community officials, settlement of Jewish individuals, lease matters of pubs and butcheries, matters concerning community tax and school taxes, elections of representatives, accounts of social organizations and schools, submissions of registers of births, marriages and deaths, requests for school and social aid, organization of charitable events and many other matters. The records related to Jews can be located and identified by the alphabetical indexes.
V.243. c. includes the conscription of lands and houses in town from 1856 and 1860 and the conscription of inhabitants (népösszeírás) from 1857, 1864 and 1870.
V.243. e. Records of land registries, 1854-1860, which hold records of sale, mortgage, and taxation of real estate, including urban and landed property.
V.243. f. Military records, including register book of conscriptions of recruits (újoncozási főkönyv) from 1854-1868, records of conscription (újoncozási iratok) from 1850-1871, lists of recruits (állítási lajstrom) and list of volunteers from 1866, and lists of ex-servicemen (hadviseltek) from the years 1865-1871.
- Archival history:
- The records from the years 1848-1872 were kept in the Mayor’s Office until the office was abolished in 1950. The material was taken over by the Nagykőrös branch of the Pest County Archives in the early 1950s. The fonds was re-arranged in the 1970s and reached its present form in 1979.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Mayor (polgármester) was the leading official of the towns and cities in Hungary in the post-feudal and modern era. The Mayor’s Office had several departments according to its main administrative and economic functions.
