- Scope and content:
- This special collection holds records created during the brief reign of József Sági as subprefect of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County. The collection includes letters and telegrams that Sági received after his appointment to the office on 30 May 1944, newspaper clippings, invitation cards, information leaflets, as well as his correspondence concerning various administrative issues, including the “solution of the Jewish question” dated from late May to August 1944. These include anonymous denunciations and reports, requests for Jewish apartments and businesses, and an inquiry about the inventory of Jewish assets.
- Archival history:
- The remaining fragments of the files of subprefect József Sági had been kept in the Subprefect’s office of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County until 1950, when the collection was handed over to the Pest County State Archives along with other files of the office.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County was created by the unification of the historical Pest-Pilis-Solt County and the special administrative district of Kiskunság in 1876. It was the largest and most populous public administration unit of post-World War I Hungary. Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun County was dissolved in the 1950 administrative reform.
József Sági (in 1944: Sághy, b. 1908) was a lawyer and an official of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun county between 1936 and 1944. One of the confidants of Subprefect László Endre, Sági was promoted to Second Chief Notary in early 1944. On 30 May 1944, with Endre taking over the position of the administrative state secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Sági was appointed subprefect, a post he held until the end of 1944, when the territory of the county was occupied by the Soviet Red Army.
