The Jews who inhabited this area were mostly engaged in trade and crafts, thus the collection includes their booklets, too. The booklets were used by the apprentices and journeymen and they provided personal data, data on their apprenticeship activities and travels and data on the master craftsmen who taught them the profession.
- Archival history:
- The records of the Magistrate were transferred to the Historical Archives of Pančevo in 1951, where it was being catalogued until 1953. The group of apprentice booklets was extracted to form a separate collection.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The establishment of apprentice booklets (Wanderbuch) in Europe dates back to 1808, while the Military Border and consequently the City of Pančevo established them on 29 January 1829, by the proclamation of the Emperor Francis I. Each apprentice needed to have such a booklet. The format, content and purpose of the booklet was strictly prescribed by the circular communication of the Court Military Council of 2 April 1829. The Magistrate in Pančevo was responsible for issuing the booklets, while the permission for execution of the apprenticeship was given by the General Command. The qualification was determined by the specific department of the Crafts association, later by the Cooperative of the free crafts and the Trade Association.
