The fonds of the Town of [Hungarian] Kanjiža includes documents created by the Mayor's office and documents created by the town administration.
Those created by the Mayor's office in 1941 and 1942 include 23 records related to the Jewish community in the town, mostly dealing with the matter of the citizenship and membership in various associations.
The documents created by the town administration comprises numerous records related to the Jewish community, concerning all aspects of everyday life pre-war and sufferings during the Second World War. Documents from 1941 include information on: Jewish societies, public work, the building of the Jewish Religious Community, the Water Company, citizenship certificates, reports on the illicit price rising; documents on the unpaid fees to the Jewish Religious Community; sequestration of property. The documents created in 1942 mostly included: wanted circulars, records on workers’ insurance, distribution of food vouchers, search for army recruits, information on craftsmen, taxes, and purchase of houses. The collection also contains information on the power station Rieger, on the mill Schaffer and the sawmill Riesz.
The records created in 1942 also contain details of: Jewish Lady’s Society; the permanent residence of Jewish citizens; on the suspension of work and closing of Jewish stores; information on the company owned by Leo Fuchs; certificates of citizenship issued to Jewish citizens; information on wholesale merchants Riesz, wine merchant Teichner; glass commerce Menzer; printing office Neumann; on corrections made in the birth registers; documentation on the transfer of property rights from the Jewish land to the new owners and implementation of laws on Jewish property.
Documents from 1943 include records on: taxes, certificates of permanent residence, suspension of work; forced labour; forced collection of money; soap manufacturer Fischer; steam mill Riesz; power station Rieger; on Jewish physicians, various certificates issued to Jews; search for Jewish conscripts; citizenship of Jewish citizens; requisition of nails, wire, belts, shoes, salt and tiles; on the pharmacy Beer; various municipal certificates.
Records created in 1944 deal with: Jewish immobile property; citizenship issues; crafts; photographer Kirscher; taxes and debts; various certificates on assets and nationality; sequestration of Jewish stores; lists of Jewish citizens; notification of Jews; requests for assignments of Jewish apartments and houses; prohibition of Jewish associations; distribution of valuables owned by Jews before their deportation; appointments of guardians for the property of Jews whose residence was unknown; requisition of medical equipment of Jewish physicians; requests for assignment of Jewish mobile property.
- Archival history:
- The documents were found in the City Hall Tower during the reconstruction of the repository of the Historical Archives in 1952. They were inventoried in 1961. The material created in 1941 and 1942 was processed. The documents were not arranged according to archival standards. The material was preserved fragmentarily.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- After the Hungarian occupation of Bačka County, local military authorities were set up in the county. According to the order No. 5440 of 22 July 1941 issued by the Hungarian Government, the administrative division and development of the administrative system in the so-called Southern Areas was regulated. In line with the Order, the Military Administration ceased to operate on 15 August 1941, and the civil authorities began to operate the following day. According to the directives 6040/1941 ME, 5500/1929 ME, the town government was divided into: I Presidency; II Administrative Department; III Financial and Economic Department; IV Tax Department. The last administrative activity of the town government was recorded on 7 October 1944.
