-
The Serbian State Mixed Civic School was established in 1919. From 1930 it functioned as the State Mixed Civic School. In 1934, two changes occurred: the previous name was expanded with the name of Jovan Cvijić and the agricultural course was introduced by the decree of the Education Department, dated 16 October 1934. The Kingdom of Hungary occupied Bačka in 1941 and the school operated under the name Magyar Királyi Állami Polgári Fiú- és Leányiskola (The Hungarian Royal State Civic Mixed School).
Pupils enrolled in civic schools after completing 4 grades of primary school. These were practical schools, unlike the gymnasiums which focussed on academic learning. Enrolling into the 5th grade of gymnasium was possible if a pupil passed an additional exam due to the difference in subjects.
