The collection comprises records dated 1896-2003, although the records created until 1945 were fragmentarily preserved. The occupying forces in WWI and WWII tended to destroy all records written in Serbian, the records of the Gymnasium included.
Data relating to the education of Jewish students in the Gymnasium in Pirot can be found in the annual reports of the Gymnasium for the period 1896-1941, in the Main Class Attendance and Grade Book for the school year 1940/1941. The annual reports contained the so-called classification of students with their grades and accomplishments they achieved, Jewish students included, which followed the education of each student through classes and grades in the school years. The reports ended with the statistics in which the nationality and the religion of the students were detailed. Thus, they provide evidence on the number of Jewish students who attended the Gymnasium in Pirot. The administrative books kept by the Gymnasium provided the following data on each student: name and surname, date and place of birth, nationality and citizenship, religion, name and surname of parents, their occupation and residential address, previous schooling, as well as any penalties for misconduct, if any.
- Archival history:
- The records were transferred to the Archives from the Gymnasium in 1963, 2000, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Gymnasium in Pirot began its work on 11 October 1879 under the name Pirot Real Gymnasium. During its existence, the Gymnasium changed its name several times. It worked as a four-grade school, expanded to eight-grade and returned to four-grade again. During WWII, the Gymnasium was used as part of the “Bulgarisation” of the District of Pirot. After the war the Gymnasium continued to work as the State Mixed Real Gymnasium, the Full Mixed Gymnasium, and in the school year 1950/51 as the Full Male and Full Female Gymnasium. From 2 September 1964 it operated under the name of Gymnasium “Predrag Kostić“ and since 18 May 1994 as the Gymnasium in Pirot.
