The records in this collection relate to Čoka and the villages of Potiski Sveti Nikola (now Ostojićevo), Padej, Jazovo, Sanad and Crna Bara. It contains the registers of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches from 1779 to 1895, as well as state registers which were introduced in 1895. The latter provide data on the Jewish population in Čoka and the above-mentioned villages, namely: name and surname, date of birth and/or death, religion (until 1917, this states "Israelite"), place of birth, address; occupation; parents. In addition to this, additional data regarding the pre-war and post-war period was added later. This includes change of residence or change of religion. After World War II new entries were made regarding the fate of individuals who perished in the Holocaust, mostly forwarded by the municipal registry offices in Belgrade, because the majority of Jews from that area were deported in 1941 and killed in the concentration camp Sajmište in Belgrade and elsewhere. Data on survivors and their residence (if they did not return to their home) was were entered in the registries.
The register books from the period after the First World War, i.e. from the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, are still held by the Registry Office of Čoka.
- Archival history:
- The collection was transferred to the Historical Archives of Kikinda in 2018.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Until 1895, both original registers and transcripts of births, baptisms, deaths and marriages of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic church communities were used. In 1895 the State Register Office was established, which recorded data of all residents, not only of members of certain religions. The Registry Office of the District of Čoka was the official body and certified with the seal of the Deputy Prefect of Torontal County. The City of Čoka was under the jurisdiction of Torontal County.
