- Scope and content:
- The data contained in the cadastral books and other documents are an important historical source and one of the foundations of private legal and public law order. They are very valuable for studying the life of Jews in the area of Srem and Ruma, because they refer to a wide period. Land registers and accompanying cadastral documents give evidence of the property and legal status of real estate owned by Jews and other residents of Ruma. For example, the Cadastre Land Registry of 1942, includes multiple Jewish names (Vajs, Vesel, Maks, Fišer and others). In the Cadastre Land Register of the Municipality of Ruma from 1919, the property of Jews was also registered (Maks family and others). The majority of the books and records probably contains some data on property and land held by Jews in Ruma.
- Archival history:
- Some of the records in this collection were transferred in 1991 from the Administration of the Cadastre Office of Ruma, but no details are available regarding the rest of the documents.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Jews settled in Ruma at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. By the end of the same century, the Austrian imperial government began a long process of establishing a cadastre in all areas of the Empire. The first modern cadastre of land was compiled on the basis of geodetic survey in Vojvodina (now in Serbia) was made during the rule of the Habsburg monarchy. No data on the establishment of certain cadastral administrations were preserved, but the documents show that the land was classified into the following categories: arable land, orchards, gardens, meadows, pastures, forests, marshes, mountains, swamps and lakes. Later, new categories were established, such as construction sites, whether used or unused. The Cadastre service of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes ( Yugoslavia), and even the Independent State of Croatia relied on the cadastral practice established during the Austrian Monarchy. The data from these land registers and records are still current and legally valid.
