- The collection of the Principality of Šid represents the oldest preserved administrative fonds related to the territory of what is now the Municipality of Šid. It mostly comprises correspondence of the administration of the Principality. It contains various records relating to Jewish history; such as a file related to the court dispute of Petar Kalenić, a merchant, and the Jew Mojses Šlezinger from Petrovac regarding the trade of tobacco. The court resolved the dispute in 1805 to the detriment of Šlezinger. A document dated 1798 testified that Mojses Šlezinger was the "Jewish quaestor”. The bond dated 27 August 1799 was issued by Petar Kalinić, the merchant from Šid, to Abraham Pontz for the amount of 204 for. 45.kr. In addition, a file of 29 December 1800 was preserved which relates to the request of Abraham Mendel for the debt settlement of Petar Kalinic, resulting in losing his property. There are several other documents relating to various disputes. Some of the mentioned Jewish merchants and officials might not be residents of Šid. The list of “the old-settlers, the inhabitants of Šid“ who paid the “tenth fee" to the Principality also included some Jewish surnames (Lustig and others).
- Archival history:
- The records were found in the halls of the Principality House in Šid. The administrative books were not preserved, only some of the documents.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The episcopate of Križevci, established in 1776, headed by Vasilije Božičković, the bishop, was confirmed by the Empress Maria Theresa as early as 1777 with the aim to intensify the Uniate propaganda among the Serbs in Srem. Vasilije Božičković's annual income amounted to 6,000 forints, of which he received 2,500 forints in cash from the Court Chamber, the other part comprised the chamber estates in Šid and Berkasovo, under the name of Šid Principality. That Principality was managed by the Uniate bishops of Križevci: Vasilije Božičković (1777-1786), Josif Bastatić (1790-1793), Silvester Bubanović (1795-1810), Konstantin Stanić (1814-1830), Gavrilo Smičiklas (1834-1856), Georgije Smičiklas (1858-1879), Ilija Hranilović (1883-1890). In the periods between the death of one bishop and the appointment of another, the Principality was managed by the Court Chamber. The immediate administration of the Estate consisted of: a provisor (manager), a supervisor, a chancellor, two constables and four foresters. A permanent spahi fiscal was later appointed. In addition, two maids, a cooper, a field guard, a vineyard keeper, a granary, two constables, a coachman and four farmers also worked in the Principality. Šid owned about 3,000 acres of alluvial soil, most of which was under forest, and the rest were arable land and vineyards. The land was leased. The products were sold in Croatia, while the sale of drinks, slaughtering of cattle and holding fairs were the exclusive rights of the Principality and were leased. The Šid property was nationalised in 1919 and thus ceased to exist.
