- Scope and content:
- The collection comprises testaments of individuals, as well as joint testaments and codicils, including those of Jews. They were certified in Bela Crkva and Vršac, and the testators mainly came from those two cities as well as the surrounding area which was under the jurisdiction of those courts. The collection includes a number of testators who came from places which are now part of Romania (Najdash, Kakova; Oravica; Belobreska; Sokolac; Zlatica; Langovet). The wills were written by hand, in Serbian, German, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian. Some testaments were written on court forms, but most were written on plain paper. They were sealed with sealing wax. All items are well preserved.
- Archival history:
- The testaments were found within the records of the Magistrate and the Vršac and the Bela Crkva City Administrations and were later separated out as a discrete collection. They were transferred by the City Archives of Vršac. It appears in the accession register with the number 236/1, dated 31 October 1963. It was originally a single entity ‘Collection of Testaments and Travel Documents (1804-1925)’, later it was divided into two collections: Collection of Travel Documents and Passports (F: C422) and the Collection of Testaments (F:C427).
