- Archival history:
- As soon as the Historical-Museum Department was established within the Federation of the Jewish Communities, documents related to the Jewish communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stored in two boxes, were deposited with the Department. One referred to the Jews from the area of Sarajevo and the other to all other Jewish communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- According to historical data, the Jewish Community of Sarajevo dates back to the first arrivals of the Jewish families to Sarajevo in 1565, either individually or in groups, some fifty years after their persecution from Spain and Portugal. They settled in the Sarajevo quarter called Il Curtižo, where they erected the synagogue Il kal grandi in 1581. The Jews of Sarajevo were primarily engaged in trade, but their contribution to the intellectual and free professions was considerable. The Jewish Community of Sarajevo existed throughout the Ottoman and Austro-Hungary Empires, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Socialist Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, until the modern times, and it used to be one of the strong pillars of the identity of the Jews in Sarajevo.
