Following the liberation from the centuries-long period of the Ottoman domination in the Balkans in the 19th century, the re-established Serbian state embarked on setting up the cornerstones of the new cultural and state institutions. The need to put Serbia’s monetary and treasury affairs in order became apparent. In 1845 the article entitled ‘Current Monetary Crisis’ was published in the ‘Srpske novine’ which called for the establishment of such an institution. Thirty years passed until this initiative was realised. In 1884 the Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia was founded. It was housed in a building specially designed and erected for the needs of the Bank, situated in Kralja Petra Street.
The Bank was organised on the model of the Belgian National Bank. Until 1920, the Bank had the following bodies: Governor, Vice-Governor, Board, Principal Board, Governing Board, Shareholders Committee and Discount Board. The Supervisory Board was founded in 1885 and had seven members, the overall number of members being changed in line with the legislation, but the jurisdiction remained unchanged. Mainly, the Supervisory Board was responsible for the supervision of the overall activities and performance of the National Bank: reviewing administrative books and cash boxes, adoption of the budget and balances, and changes of the interest rate. The members of the Supervisory Board were elected by the Assembly of Shareholders for a mandate of five years, from among the shareholders residing in Belgrade, who deposited 15 shares of the Bank during the term of office. From 1884 to 1934, the Supervisory Board of the National Bank had a president, a vice-president and the members. Neither the Principal nor the Supervisory Board existed during the occupation period. Some of the members of the Supervisory Board were Jews: Chaim Levi Coen, Hajim D. Azriel, Solomon Coen.
After the First World War and the unification of the South Slovenes, the Privileged Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia became the National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. During the World War II it operated from the seat of its representative body in London. In 1946 the Bank was nationalised and operated under the name of the National Bank of Yugoslavia. Since 2003 it has been the National Bank of Serbia.
