The collection of the Municipality of Zemun comprises documents created by its departments, secretariats and various commissions between 1945 and 1967. Various kinds of documents were preserved: minutes of the Municipality councils, Manufacturers’ Council, office registers and accompanying indexes, evidence books of war damages claims, registers of issued birth, death, and marriage certificates, citizenship register, registers of contracts related to students of economy, financial books and other administrative documentation.
The collection contains various records relating to Jewish history; such as: inventory of the liquidated Jewish Real Estate Administrations, whose mandates had been transferred to the State Tax Office in 1942, which included lists of Jewish citizens living in Zemun (providing the following data: name and surname, profession, address, date and place of birth); lists of registrations of Jewish citizens following the Directive on Obligatory Registration of Jewish property; lists of buildings in the territory of the Municipality of Zemun, which previously had been owned by Jews and were transferred into state-owned property; lists of Jewish residential buildings in Zemun; lists of Jewish craft workshops and commercial stores in Zemun; appointment of Viktor Jung to the position of supervisor and administrator of the Jewish houses; lists of Jewish industrial companies in Zemun.
War damages claims in the collection provide the following data: name and surname, father’s name, age, profession, permanent residence, nationality, and supporting documentation, information on the person who submitted the claim, evaluation of war damage, list of belongings. In some cases the claim provided information on damaged health, dignity and self-esteem, as well as data for people who had been arrested: information on the length of time spent in arrest, evaluation on war damage, which occupying authority caused the damage. War damage claims were submitted by Jewish religious community of Zemun and National Committee of the Town of Zemun for people who had been executed in the camps (mostly in Stara Gradiška and Jasenovac), who perished during the occupation and those who were officially proclaimed as missing. The collection includes 366 war damage claims related to Jewish property.
It also includes permits for construction or reconstruction of buildings issued to citizens of Zemun in the early 20th century. Technical documentation includes records related to normalisation and modernisation of life in Zemun, such as construction permits, construction and repairs of the drainage system, plans for drilling wells, technical descriptions of objects, certificates that the objects had been positioned in accordance with regulations, permits, commissions’ reports; for example, technical documentation issued to Moša Anaf for the construction of a well and a bath in his house at Beogradska Street No. 14 in Zemun.
