The largest portion of this collection consists of the Università Israelitica archive (26 folders), which was the highest administrative body of the Community. Alongside it is the Historical Archive of the Pious Institute Council (6 folders), the local charitable and welfare institution, which can be considered an independent archival unit.
The archive contains documents related to education, correspondence, petitions, judicial acts and meeting minutes, as well as tax registers, booklets, and payment orders. It includes material from the 17th to the 20th century, although the majority dates from the 19th century.

- The Historical Archive of Università Israelitica of Pitigliano was transferred to the premises of UCEI in 1953, where it remained until 1993, when it was moved to the storage facilities of the National Library “Tullia Zevi”. The collection has been reorganised thanks to funding from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation.

The origins of the Jewish community of Pitigliano date back to the second half of the 16th century, when Jews, expelled from small communities by two papal bulls in 1569 and 1593, and persecuted by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I, fled to border areas such as Pitigliano to avoid the ghettos of Rome, Ancona, Florence and Siena. They were drawn to the area both by its proximity and the protection granted to them by the local lord. Here, in fact, they enjoyed full civil rights, including the right to own property. In this town, the community lived for nearly four centuries, benefiting from a regime of relative tolerance and a fairly peaceful coexistence with the Catholic part of the population. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, a wave of migration affected the entire population, which eventually led, in 1931, to the disappearance of the Jewish community and its incorporation into that of Livorno.
Made up of merchants, workers and artisans, the community was governed by Università Israelitica. It had a Rabbi, a school, a Talmud Torah, a Confraternity of Mercy, and, since 1855, the Pious Institute Council (Pio Istituto Consiglio) – one of the wealthiest charitable institutions in the town, which played a fundamental role within the community. The Pious Institute Council, established in 1854 thanks to a testamentary bequest, was an institution of assistance and charity whose aims were to promote the learning of arts and trades, provide education for the poor, and establish dowries for underprivileged girls.
