The collection of the Municipal Archive of Salinas de Añana contains documentation produced and received by the town council of Salinas de Añana from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Among the documents, royal privileges, commercial grants, and documentation regarding the borders of the town and the exploitation of the salt mines stand out. There are also judicial documents and a book of agreements, elections, and accounts of the town council (1507-1531).
Concerning Jews, Fernando IV notified the town of Salinas de Añana of the order granted to the municipal councils of Castile in the Cortes de Burgos, according to which, Jews would be able to be neither tax-renters, nor tax collectors; Jewish scribes would work separately from the scribes of the town council; and the judges of the town would be in charge of making deliveries of debts to the Jews (1301). A royal letter from Queen Isabel in favour of the Count of Salinas de Añana confirms that Jews had to pay the “servicio y medio servicio” and the “cabeza de pecho” taxes.
- Archival history:
- The Council of Salinas de Añana signed an agreement with the Provincial Council of Alava to keep the archive in the Provincial Archive, where it is located and can be consulted.
