- Archival history:
- The documentation was in the custody of the administrative bureau of the Institute and was preserved in the offices of the Humanities Center of the CSIC at Calle Duque de Medinaceli, 4 (Madrid). Between 2003 and 2005, the Unit for Archives and Documentation Support had custody. In this period, a brief description of the collection was made and it was incorporated into the general inventory. Finally, in 2007, it entered the new Center for Humanities and Social Sciences of the CSIC, and from 2010, it has been preserved in the Tomas Navarro Tomas Library Archive.
- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) was created by Act 24/11/1939. Buildings and responsibilities of the “Junta para Ampliacion de Estudios” (JAE) were transferred to the new institution. The Benito Arias Montano Institute for Arabic and Hebrew Studies was established by Act 10/2/1940, which regulated the functions of the CSIC. Since 1941, the School of Hebrew Studies, led by Francisco Cantera, belonged to the Institute, and it was based in Madrid and Barcelona. Throughout its existence, the Institute developed several research lines: Hebrew-Biblical Section; Hebrew/Jewish-Spanish Culture Section; Near Eastern Section. In 1941, the journal Sefarad was created on the initiative of Francisco Cantera and Jose Maria Millas in order to publish the results of the Institute’s research.
In 1944, the Miguel Asin Palacios Institute for Arabic Studies was created by Act 9/11/1944. Since then, the Benito Arias Montano Institute has been exclusively devoted to Hebrew and Near East Studies. In 1951, the Cardenal Cisneros Philological Seminary was created in order to cluster the Semitic Studies inside the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Beginning in 1960, Sephardic Studies started to occupy an important position in the Institute, highlighting the works of Iacob M. Hassan. In 1984, the Benito Arias Montano Institute was merged into the new Institute of Philology.
