- Scope and content:
- Ludovico Mortara was known as “the son of the Rabbi”, because his father Marco (Mordekay) had been the chief rabbi of the Mantua Jewish Community. The 53 papers of his fonds have no direct interest for the history of the Jews, being letters of the Gonzaga family members or documents of the Agnelli-Soardi family. They rather represent a sample of the taste of a 19th century Jewish collector, as they were purchased in 1886 from Lodovico Mortara by the Mantua municipality.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Ludovico Mortara (1855-1937), was a Mantuan lawyer and politician; in 1919-1920 he became Minister of Justice in the Francesco Nitti's government. In 1886 he mediated on behalf of the State Archive of Mantua the purchase of the Agnelli Soardi's papers (1583-1643) with the Municipality of Mantua. For this reason, the State Archive of Mantua preserved this collection of papers under his name. See also http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/lodovico-mortara_%28Dizionario-Biografico%29/
