This fonds contains acts related to the campaign named “One million rifles”, launched by general Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1859 to raise money to buy arms for his military actions. Giuseppe Finzi, born in 1816 into an ancient Jewish family, was a prominent figure of the Italian Risorgimento, first as part of the movement founded in 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini “Giovine Italia” (Young Italy), later involved in the conspiracy against the Austrian Government together with the so-called “Martiri di Belfiore” (Belfiore Martyrs, 1850-55), and finally appointed in Milan, along with Enrico Besana, formal agent of the central committee for the subscription to the “One million rifles” fund.
The fonds consists of letters (including correspondence from London and Buenos Aires), counts, monthly reports and lists of donors.
There are also references to other Jewish patriots involved in the same project, such as Giuseppe Levi (Vice president of the “Associazione Unitaria Italiana”, Unitary Italian Association), Emilio Levi, Battista Cantoni, Giovanni Cantoni and Pacifico Norsa, lieutenant of the National Guard in Milan.
