- The archive of the Cavriani family contains all the documents produced by this noble family during seven centuries of history in Mantua. The Cavriani family had countless contacts with Jewish people, so that in many folders of this fonds there are documents related to Jews. In folder no. 6 there is a file containing the acts of a trial set up by Giulio Cavriani against two Jewish bankers, the brothers Iacob and Isaac “de Tizzano” (1550-1551). In folder no. 9, there are documents about loans issued or completed with Jewish bankers (Mattasia de Arianis, 1603-1604; Lazzaro de Italia, 1614; Leone Galli, 1616). In folder no. 27, there is a file containing receipts for loan made by Jewish bankers: Angelo and Raffael Norsa (1660); Isach Norsa and Benedetto Sullam (1653, 1667); Jona Ravà; Bonaiuto di Fano (1660); Leon Provenzale (1619); Abram Provenzale (1664-1665); Moisè Sullam (1667); Abram Vita Sullam (1682), who in this same year also sold 700 pearls to Vittoria Cavriani; Israel Jacob Forti (1669, 1672, 1677), together with Abram Pontremoli (1671). In folder no. 50 there are similar documents, kept in the file named “Norsa”, with receipts signed by Angel and Raffael Norsa (1655, 1657, 1662) and by Benedetto Moisè Norsa (1646, 1647), and other Jewish bankers, kept in the file “Ebrei diversi” (Other Jews), such as Anselmo and Grassin Levi (1643); Simon Foà (1662, 1663); Leon Vita Fano (1668). In folder no. 77, Vita Fano (1732; also in folder no. 78) and Davide Civita, against whom marquis Antonio Cavriani issued a trial in 1732 (also in folder no. 76). In folder no. 81 there were originally acts related to some Jews from Mantua (Lucia Basilea, Eva Grassini, and Joseph Vailer; 1735), but they have been lost. In folder no. 128, the Jews Angelo Benedetto, Israel Iacob, David Vita, Moisé, Pace and Salomon Aron formerly Leon Donato Loria are given emphyteusis (ground rent) by the marquis Antonio Cavriani (1829). In folder no. 176 there are acts related to the so-called “ius gazagà”, a sort of permanent tenancy, paid by some Jews living in the Mantua ghetto to Giuseppe Cavriani for the houses he owned inside the ghetto (1800-1809). In many other folders there are individual documents relating to Jews, above all members of the Cantoni family.
- Archival history:
-
The Archivio Gentilizio Cavriani was deposited at the State Archive of Mantua in 1988, when the owner, the Marchesa Aliana Cavriani Marsigli, left the 18th-century palace where it was kept. At the State Archive, this documentation, although only partially ordered and inventoried, has assumed a prominent role among the private archives, both for its historical interest and for its scope of around 3,000 units (cassettes, boxes, volumes, registers, cartons, maps).
