- This fonds contains documents of the Redondesco municipality (part of Mantua district). There are many documents related to Jewish history, in particular: letters written by the “commissario generale degli ebrei di Mantova” or “Commissario degli ebrei” (Officer/Commissioner of the Jews, a Christian judge elected by the Duke of Mantua to serve as the only figure dealing with civil and criminal Jewish laws, in cases interfering with Christians; his real, effective jurisdictional authority was often questioned at the time) to Redondesco podestà or pretura (police court) (1653-1654; 1675-1678; 1750-1766; 1769-1772) and judicial acts concerning Jews, but usually written by Christian notaries or authorities: a trial between Moisè Finzi, a Jew from Mantua, and Giacomo Cantoni and his sons (1762); authorisations for selling pledges left by debtors to Jewish pawnshop owners or for selling goods to pay Jewish firms (Abram Coen, 1752; Raffael Vita Bassani, 1752; Cantoni e Norsa, 1757); a Jew (Benedetto de Pertu) appointed by Redondesco “pretore” as trustee for Regina, daughter of Salomone Basilea, as she is under age (1624; all the Jews are resident in Redondesco); a dowry given by Salomone Basilea, here named as “Jewish banker”, to his daughter Regina for her marriage to Beniamino de Hiena, a Jew from Gualtieri (1624); recognition of debts owed to Redondesco Jewish bankers (Daniele, Leone and Isacco Norsa, 1628).
