This fonds, also known as “Prefettura di Mantova. 1866-1951”, contains acts related to the exchange of letters with the Mantua Prefecture. There are three folders with documents of significance for the history of the Jews.
Folder no. 1806 contains financial acts of the year 1907 of several Jewish institutions: Jewish kindergarten; Commissione Israelitica Culto e Beneficenza (Jewish Board for Faith and Charity); brotherhood Mazal Bedulà, providing dowries for Jewish poor, unmarried women; Istituto Franchetti, an institution created in Mantua to help poor students thanks to the endowment left in 1903 to the Mantua Municipality by Giuseppe Franchetti, a famous Jewish philanthropist and entrepreneur; Pio istituto Trabotti, another charitable institution created in Mantua thanks to Samuele Trabotti’s bequest, made in 1834 in order to help poor Jewish people (the file also contains a printed copy of its rules, “Fondazione e regolamento del Pio istituto Samuele Trabotti contenuti nel testamento del 22 febbraio 1834 del benemerito fondatore”, Mantova, 1877); a file about the difficulties raised in finding the proper institution for fulfilling the will of Tullo Massarani, a famous Jewish writer and politician born in Mantua, who also became senator of the Italian Kingdom, and left £10,000 in 1900 to provide educational assistance to poor children of any religion in Mantua.
Folders no. 2890 and 2891 are related to the issue of the “dissequestro” (un-seizure) of Jewish belongings after World War II, and should be kept in the EGELI fonds (see there). In these two folders, dated 1944, but including documents up to the years 1950-1951, there is a list, kept in alphabetical order, of all seizures of Jewish belongings for which no decree of un-seizure had intervened (that is, Jewish families who had not yet had their property returned). Each file (by family name) contains the sequestration decree and all the belongings seized, both real estate and personal property; in the second folder, reports of restitutions follow, also kept in alphabetical order. Index of this fonds: no. 230.
