- This fonds contains documents relating to the famous episode known as “Martiri di Belfiore” (Belfiore Martyrs). The Belfiore martyrs were a group of independence fighters condemned to death by hanging in 1853, named after the site where the sentence was carried out, in the valley of Belfiore at the south entrance of the city of Mantua. The Auditorato di guarnigione (Garrison Audience Chamber) was one of the magistracies of judicial police active under the Austrian Government in Mantua which had jurisdiction over the investigation stage preceding a trial (although not over the proceedings nor the trial itself). One of the patriots involved was a Jew, Giuseppe Finzi (for more detail about whom see also other two fonds, “Carte Giuseppe Finzi” and “Documentazione di diverse provenienze”). This fonds includes the search record of his house carried out by the Mantua police force; the warrant issued against him; details of his interrogation; his criminal record and his health certificate; court martial (1852-1853).
