It not only administered justice but also had to express its opinion about decisions rejected by civil and criminal judges. Some of the “cause particolari” (private lawsuits) are related to Jews: folders no. 3228 and 3239 contain “memoriali delle case del ghetto” (memorial acts of the houses of the Jewish ghetto), collecting a lot of acts of the years 1610-1611, when the Duke of Mantua decided to create a Jewish enclosure within the city: pleas of the Jews, requests for having a “bottega” (workshop) in the ghetto, ducal orders, copies of the official acts of the “deputati per l’erezione del ghetto” (deputies for the erection of the ghetto) who were the only ones responsible for granting houses into the ghetto, prohibition to Jews and Christians of selling, buying or renting houses into the ghetto without the deputati’s preliminary permission, and so on. Folder no. 3376 contains acts of the “massari” (bailiffs, administrators) of the Jewish Community and their requests for punishment, decrees of exile and the like, for misbehaving Jews (1624-1646). At least 10 volumes contain lawsuits between Jews (nos. 3533-3538; 3680; 6723-6725), especially the families Norsa (Angelo and Raffaele), Sullam, Levi and Coen in the 17th and 18th centuries, and others similar lawsuits can be found all through the fonds; for example, in folder no. 1379 there is a file about the lawsuit among a Jewish convert for the granting of the “legittima” (legitim, inheritance) from his still living father (1778-1785).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Senato di Giustizia was established in Mantua by the duke Guglielmo Gonzaga in 1571 to serve as the Supreme Court of Justice of the Dukedom of Mantua. It not only administered justice, but it also had to express its opinion about decisions rejected by civil and criminal judges. In 1606 a reform extended its competencies. In 1750 the Senato di Giustizia was replaced by the Supremo consiglio di giustizia (Supreme Council of Justice), even though deeds continued to be delivered until 1786.
