The first series contains files on the general administration of the community: community regulations from 1867, minutes of the community meetings and board meetings (1843-1868), board files from the years 1858-1914 and 1927-1932 (including administrative orders, notifications of arrivals and departures, notifications of Chief Rabbi Meier Lerner (1857-1930) in Altona, finances, membership in the Association of German Jews and in the Prussian State Association of Jewish Communities). One of the files contains an admission ticket and the printed program for the festive service on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Rabbi Simcha Simon Bamberger (1871-1961) in Wandsbek on 29 May 1929.
A file on the membership of the community in the Association of Jewish Communities of Schleswig-Holstein contains, among other things, the statutes and minutes of the association, 1912-1925. The property files consist of only two files: on the construction of the cemetery chapel, 1902-1905 (including construction drawings) and cost estimates for the renovation of the synagogue, 1909.
The series of financial documents includes cash books on income and expenses of the community, 1815-1904 (partly in Hebrew), along with two logs of overdue community contributions, 1855-1857. Finally, there is a file on the petition of the Jewish communities to the Reichstag on Jewish ritual slaughter (shechita), 1887 (including printed reports).
Also included in the fonds is a file of material on the Israelite Men's Association founded in 1864 (initially as the Israelite Men's Association for Nursing and Burial) with a copy of the statutes from 1883 and printed statutes of 1905.
- Archival history:
- The files of the Israelite community in Elmshorn were previously held by the Central Archives of German Jews. The folder with documents of the Israelite men’s Association (Israelitischer Männerverein) originates from the "Sammlung Süßmann“, a separate collection in the Central Archive. All items were transferred in 1996 by the Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archive) to the archive of the Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin - Centrum Judaicum (Foundation New Synagogue Berlin - Centrum Judaicum).

The duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were part of Denmark until 1864; in 1866 they came to Prussia, which combined them in 1867 in the province of Schleswig-Holstein. Jews had lived in Holstein since the 17th century but were only allowed to settle in a few specific locations. With the law of 14 July 1863 concerning the conditions of the Jews in the Duchy of Holstein, they were granted legal equality. In 1946, the province became the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Since 1685 Jews had been living in Elmshorn, which received city rights in 1870. About 25 Jewish families lived here around 1730, and a good 100 years later the community reached its peak with over 200 members (8% of the population). The community’s district also included other locations in the districts of Pinneberg and Steinburg. The synagogue, built in 1845, was inaugurated in January 1846. From the middle of the 19th century the number of members fell as a result of emigration: in c. 1890 the community had around 130 members, around 1910 it was 125, and in 1932 there were still 80 individuals.
