- The collection of the Arnswalde synagogue community (now Choszczno (Poland)) contains files on the legal status of Jews, decrees of the authorities, statutes and general correspondence, as well as files from the board of directors and the assembly of representatives (correspondence, minutes) from the years 1854-1892. There are also files on the employment of religious officials with personnel files, amongst others for the religion teachers and preachers Abraham Berliner (1833-1915), H Tietz and Isaak Goldmann. The collection also includes inventories of the community and files on real estate and buildings (including the mikveh and cemetery) and finances (cash books, budget and invoices), with a record of outstanding tax for 1886-87. Finally, there is a file on religious school (1856-1857), files on religious matters (synagogue regulations, initiative for a reform of the worship service, shechita), on support and a small file on the burial association (chevra kadisha), 1862.
- Archival history:
- The files of the synagogue community of Arnswalde were part of the former Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden [General Archive of German Jews] with the designation Dep. Arnswalde. In 1996 the Federal Archives transferred the holdings to the CJA. One additional file was handed over in 2008 by the Brandenburg State Main Archives. The collection was partly rearranged in 2019.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- There was a Jewish community in Arnswalde in the Middle Ages - a synagogue and a cemetery are mentioned in 1321. Jews settled there again from the late 17th century. In 1843 around 90 Jews lived in the town, around 1880 more than 200, after which the number fell again (around 120 in 1933). According to state records, in 1843 the community had a synagogue, bathhouse, schoolhouse and cemetery.
