The gymnasium, which was established in 1920, changed its name several times. From 1920-1926 it was known as the Kaunas German Higher Real Gymnasium, from 1926 to 1936 it was called the Kaunas German Gymnasium and from 1936 until 1940 it was known as the Kaunas German Private Gymnasium. In 1921 the gymnasium was moved to the building of Jewish Real School and the lessons were conducted interchangeably. The students of the German Gymnasium studied in the afternoon, while the students of the Jewish school studied in the morning.
The gymnasium accepted students of all nationalities: Jews, Russians and Lithuanians. Until 1933 approximately 100 Jewish students attended the German Gymnasium. Following the Nazis’ coming to power which resulted in a rise in antisemitism, almost all of the Jewish students left the school.
The headmaster of the school from 1921 until 1940 was Johannes Strauch. In 1940 the gymnasium was closed.
