- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The state knitwear factory “Gija” consisted of three smaller knitwear companies: “Fortūna”, “Žiedas” and “Pašvaistė”. The Minister of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania approved the Articles of Association of the “Fortūna” joint-stock company on 4 June 1934. The founders of the company were Meyer Finkel, Zechariah Vilenchik, Savelijus Bregauskas, Chaim Bushakevic and Yochai (Jochelis) Nevezhski. The company was nationalised in 1940 and its name was changed to “Laimė” in 1941.
Before the “Žiedas” company was turned into a state-nationalised knitwear factory, it was originally established as the “Shereshevski & Co” joint-stock company in 1934. The founders of this company were Chjena Shereshevski, Noachim Levitan, Nochim-Meyer Gershtein, Aaron Akoton and Shlomo-Mendel Levi. The company was nationalised in 1940 and in 1943 it ceased to operate.
