This collection contains records from the holdings of the Vilnius Public Library and the Museum of Antiquities from 1852-1915 including annual reports, lists of benefactors and donated antiquities, documents of building repairs and lease, visitor statistics, etc., correspondence with central and local public institutions (the Ministry of People’s Education, the Chancellery of the Vilnius Governor General, the Vilnius City Council, etc.), and scientific societies of the Russian Empire and foreign countries. The entire collection of photographs, as a part of this fonds, consists of several thousand images from the middle of the 19th century and first part of the 20th century.
Jewish related material includes: two photographic images with the description “The Jews of Mogilev (Mogiliavas) are manufacturing fur coats”, published in Moscow (1901); a photograph with the description “A potter and customer Jews Yankel (Jankel)”, taken by Isaak Serbov and published in Gorodnaya, Belarus (1912); two photocopied images of unidentified rabbis (first half of the 20th century); of a set of postcards of portraits of rabbis (first half of the 20th century); a postcard photograph with a description in Polish attached “Students at work”, depicting student leather workers at the "ORT" factory in Łódź (1926). Finally there is a photograph of teachers and students posing at a Jewish primary school in Kalinkavichy. There is a petition attached to the image in which the Jewish community of Kalinkavichy asks the patron of education of Vilnius county to terminate the activity of illegal Jewish evening schools and to suspend people who pretend to be teachers. The person in the image and in the petition are identified.
- Archival history:
- The iconographical material of fonds No. 46 was accumulated by the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission (1855-1865), the Vilnius Public Library and its branch, Museum of Antiquities (1867-1915). The collections of photographs and albums were gathered by the Belarusian ethnographer Isaac Serbov, archeologist Michal Kuscinski, the Suprasl Eastern Orthodox Monastery and the Moscow Rumyantsev Museum. Certain photographs came to the Vilnius Public Library under curious circumstances, and their attribution and identification still need to be finalised.
