- The collection contains the materials of the large G.& L. Edelshtein Tobacco Factory Partnership in Vilnius in 1896. The collection contains business correspondence of the owners with Russian and foreign firms and merchants, as well as orders for the company’s products, cash accounts and bills of exchange. The documents in the collection facilitate the study of the economic situation of the factory, the status of its owner in the business and industrial communities in Vilnius in particular and in the Russian Empire in general. The documents in the collection also make it possible to study the owner's business partners within Russia and Western Europe. In addition, the papers enable researchers to glimpse into the impact transnational connections had on business strategies and on the status of Jewish employees in private companies.

It is not known when the G.& L. Edelshtein Tobacco Factory Partnership in Vilna (Vilnius) was established or when it closed. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the factory served as one of the main arenas for the struggle of Jewish workers. Accordingly, quite a few revolutionaries from the Bund Party (The General Union of Jewish Workers in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia) and the Russian Social-Democratic Party (RSDRP) were active in the protests.
Most of the factory’s employees were Jewish. The factory manufactured its goods using crude, unsophisticated means. In 1896, one of the most famous strikes of the time took place at the factory as a result of Mr. Edelshtein’s intention to replace most of the male workers with women. Finally, he was forced to retract. During the strike, the police arrested the workers and the Chief Rabbi of Vilnius spoke against the strikers. After the strike, many workers were sent to prison for two weeks.
