- Scope and content:
- This collection contains documents of the Administration Department of the Ministry of Interior. Inventory 1 contains files of associations, organisations and societies including Jewish associations: Gmilus-Chesed, Ezro, Ezras-Israel, Bikur-Holim, Ort, Agudat Israel, Mahzikei Tora, Tiferet Bahurim, Talmud Torah and others. Documents include association statutes, lists of board members, founders, members and branches, budgets, minutes, biographical news and more.
- Archival history:
- The LCVA was established in 1921, following a statute of the Lithuanian Board of Education. In 1940, when the Soviets occupied Lithuania, the NKVD took over the archive. During the Nazi occupation of 1941-1944 the archive continued its activities and was renamed the Vilnius National Archive. Following the second Soviet occupation of 1944, the NKVD regained control of the archives. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the archive was renamed the Lithuanian Central State Archive.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Administration Department of the Ministry of Interior was set up in 1919 with the establishment of an independent Lithuanian Republic. It dealt with questions related to nationality, oversaw activities and the process of granting foreign and internal passports and visas, the Lithuanisation of surnames and name places, granted foreigners residency and work permits, registered associations and organisations, censured films, supervised the activities of the emigration bureau, solved administrational cases, tended to the ministry’s finances, inspected work hours and the personal files of employees, provided the ministry and its other departments with weapons, uniforms, books and folders.
