- This collection contains materials produced by the Jewish Central Education Committee’s private co-ed Jewish seminary in Vilnius. It contains the following documents, mostly in Yiddish (other than the correspondence with Vilnius County, which is in Polish): minutes of meetings and examinations, students’ health check forms, student registration forms, admission essays, graduation diploma, correspondence with the Vilnius County School Curator, lecture plans and materials, and lists of lecturers.
- Archival history:
- The LCVA was established in 1921, following a statute of the Lithuanian Board of Education. In 1940, when Soviets occupied Lithuania, the NKVD took over the archive. During the Nazi occupation of 1941-1944 the archive continued its activities, and it was renamed the Vilnius National Archive. Following the second Soviet occupation of 1944, the NKVD regained control of the archive. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the archive was renamed the Lithuanian Central State Archive. LCVA took over this collection in 1952 and rearranged it in 1999.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Jewish Central Education Committee’s co-ed Jewish teacher’s seminary in Vilnius was established on 20 September 1921. Both men and women who had completed 7-8 years of schooling could apply to study at the seminary. The teaching language was Yiddish. In the year of its establishment, 1921-1922, 40 students began studying there. The first director of the seminary was S Gurvich. Upon completion of their studies at the seminary, the young teachers could teach in private Jewish schools. In 1931, the Vilnius County School Curator accused the students of the seminary of anti-governmental activity and it was closed down.
