- Archival history:
- The date of the reception of the documents and their source is undetermined. The fonds was last reviewed and signed by an archivist on 16 May 1956. The documents were recorded in the Kaunas branch of the former Lithuanian SSR Central State Archives.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Zarasai used to be known as Novoalexandrovsk as it was renamed by the son of Tsar Nicolas I in 1836. This name was maintained until 1918. From 1918-1929 the town was known as Ežerėnai. Its Yiddish name Ezherene is also derived from Ežerėnai. The current name Zarasai was adopted in 1929. In 1847 there were about 473 Jews in the town, and in the 1890s there were about 3,000. About one third of Zarasai Jews worked the land and the rest were tradesmen and craftsmen. The community had six prayer houses, study houses and one big synagogue.
