- Scope and content:
- The collection of the Rygiškės Jonas State Men's Gymnasium in Marijampolė contains pupils' certificates and personal files, class journals, minutes of staff meetings, various financial documents, and data on the school’s teachers. The gymnasium was attended by many Jewish pupils and therefore there were Jewish religion classes. Consequently, the collection is of great importance to scholars of the history of Russian Jews in general and the study of education of Jews and modernisation processes within the Jewish public in particular. The collection includes a file, dated 1885, with records about the work of Iaakov Keil'son, a Jewish religion teacher at the school (inventory 1, file 17). In addition, the collection includes numerous separate personal documents of Jewish pupils of various years. These materials allow researchers to understand the criteria for the admittance of Jews into the school, including their identity and background. For example, the papers of Abel' Braunstein include his birth certificate and a certificate of his studies at a previous school (inventory 1, file 49). The documents of Moisei Rosenblum include a certificate attesting to his affiliation with the merchant estate (inventory 1, file 156), and Abram Miniovitch's documents include information on his achievements in the seventh grade at the gymnasium (inventory 1, file 225). Personal documents of the Jewish pupils also contain various applications, including requests for admission to the gymnasium. While this is not evident in the inventories, it is reasonable to assume that Jewish names may also be found in a book of candidates for studies at the gymnasium, dated 1903-1910, and among personal files of the pupils dated 1916-1917.
- Archival history:
- In 1996 the collection of the Rygiškės Jonas State Mens' Gymnasium in Marijampolė was transferred from the Kaunas Regional State Archives to the Lithuanian State Historical Archives.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1840 a four-year school from Sejny was moved to Marijampolė. In 1867 the school became a seven-year gymnasium with a focus on the efforts of the Russian government to prevent the strengthening of Polish cultural influence in the region following the Polish Uprising of 1863. For decades, the gymnasium became a significant cultural centre in the Suvalkija region and one of the best schools in Lithuania. During World War I, the gymnasium was evacuated to Yaroslavl until 1918. In 1920 it was named in honour of Rygiškių Jonas, one of the pen names of linguist Jonas Jablonskis who was one of its graduates.
