The collection contains papers of the Szaniawski family, including: privileges and orders of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the Kings of Poland regarding the Szaniawski family and its estates; metrical records of the family; wills and various judicial documents; correspondence on political and personal issues; inventories and plans of the family’s estates; and numerous papers related to the economic activities of family members.
The collection includes Jewish-related records mainly related to the economic activities of Jews on the Polish landowners’ estates. These are materials concerning the activities of Jews as tavern keepers, alcohol tax-farmers, leaseholders of distilleries, and other occupations on the estates of the Polish szlachta. For example, there is a a note from 1754 on the judicial proceedings against the Jewish tavern keeper on the estate of Slovensk (inventory 1, file 258). Another example is the 1742 contract of Stanislaw Szaniawski with Shaia Gimbelovich on the leasing of the tavern, the mill and more on the Berezino estate (inventory 1, file 320).
The Jewish-related materials also include papers on the Jews who were engaged in the timber trade in the 18th century and materials related to the violence and criminal actions of the Jews or those directed against the Jews on the Szaniawski family estates. For example, the file of 1761-1764 mentions the murder of a Slovensk estate resident by the Jewish distiller Sroel Ioselevich, and the file of 1743 mentions the beating of the Jewish glovemaker master I Shlemovich owing to the delayed fulfilment of an order of mittens. The file of 1655 mentions the Grodno court decision in relation to the debt dispute between Ierzhi Massalsky and the creditor Dvora Rubin (inventory 1, file 740). In addition, the collection includes complaints on the oppression of Jews in Augustow, and papers on disputes between Jews and Christians in this town in the 17-18th centuries (inventory 1, files 491, 503).
