- Administrative/biographical history:
- Jokūbas Josadė was a famous Jewish-Lithuanian writer. His real birth date is not known, but officially it is claimed he was born on 15 August 1911 in Kalvarija in Marijampolė County. The writer is also known by the name of Jankelis, Jakovas and Jokūbas. After graduating from Kalvarija secondary school in 1926, Josadė continued his studies at the Virbalis Jewish Gymnasium, studying in Hebrew. Two years later, he had to drop out owing to his anti-Zionist attitudes. In 1929 he began studying, in Yiddish, at the Jewish Gymnasium in Ukmergė. From 1931 to 1933 Josadė was drafted to the army and afterwards he moved to Kaunas. After dropping out of Kaunas University, he debuted as a writer in 1935 in “Folksblat”, a Jewish education fellowship newspaper. In 1935 he was also actively involved in a Jewish left-wing writers’ organisation. Between 1937 and 1938, Josadė worked in a Jewish theatre and also as a secretary for "Iteg". In 1939 he worked for the “Folksblat” newspaper and from 1940 to 1941 for the Yiddish language Soviet newspaper “Der Emes”. In 1940 Josadė joined the Lithuanian SSR Writers Union, as a member of the Jewish writers association. In 1941 he was employed by the Lithuanian SSR state publishing house as an editor of Jewish literature. When the Nazis occupied Lithuania in 1941, he moved to Almaty (Kazakhstan), but was drafted into the Red Army in 1942. From 1948 to 1959 he worked for the literary magazine “Pergale” in Soviet Lithuania. As his health declined, he devoted himself to writing in Yiddish and Lithuanian. J Josadė died in Vilnius on 09 November 1995 and was buried there.
