This collection contains records of the Alytus County Governor from 1918 to 1940. It contains documents from the following departments: General, Police, Administration, Municipality and Economy. The collection includes some material related to Jews. There is correspondence with the education board about the Jewish registry and elections of synagogue leaders and cases pertaining to numerous Jewish associations. - Archival history:
- The Lithuanian Soviet Republic’s Central State Archive took over the fonds from the Panevezys State Archive in 1940. The fonds was reorganised in 1952, and supplemented in 1959, 1960, and 1969.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Alytus County Governor was active from 1918 to 1940. The position was established upon the creation of an independent Lithuanian Republic in 1918. The County Governor had to oversee the creation of local municipalities, organise the creation of stations, and appoint heads of stations. He was responsible for internal security, education, health organisations and the establishment and activities of associations.
