The organisation was established in 1916 in Vilnius. On 4 June 1920 the club was registered in the Polish Governor's Office in Vilnius County of the Eastern Land, and on 8 November 1920 it was registered in the Central Lithuania Interim Administration Commission Interior Department. In 1933 the fellowship named itself “Makabi”. On February 1934 they affirmed its statutes. The organisation was managed by an assembly of its members, council, audit commission, and socialist law. When Lithuania regained control of Vilnius in October 1939, the society continued its work and on 11 January 1940 it was registered in the Lithuanian Ministry of Interior among other organisations.
The aim of the society was to provide physical education to Jews. “Makabi” in Vilnius organised training and competitions, cultural events, gymnastics and sports instructor courses. It had a stadium, a gym, a rowing station and a swimming pool, and an orchestra. There were options to practice gymnastics, athletics, football, boxing, rowing, swimming, cycling, skiing, hockey and other sports. The organisation promoted a healthy lifestyle, and thus organised lectures on hygiene and physiology, in addition to issuing publications.
