- The M K Čiurlionis gallery was opened in 1925 according to the law issued in 1921 by the Constituent Assembly of Lithuania and subject to the Ministry of Education. The museum was divided into two parts – the M K Čiurlionis gallery (culture museum) and the museum of war.The fonds contains records of documents related to the museum’s administrative affairs and special activities, personnel documents and correspondence. One of the two inventories of the fonds has Jewish related material: a record of correspondence between the museum and the general education assessor about the confiscation of Jewish exhibits from the museum (1942).
- Archival history:
- The institution and the date of receipt of the documents are undetermined. The documents were recorded in the Kaunas branch of the Lithuanian SSR Central State Archives on 8 January 1948.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Between 1941 and 1944 the museum was closed to the public and only a few exhibitions were displayed. Some of the exhibits were expropriated by Nazis, e.g. to Reichskommissariat Ostland in Riga and other Nazi institutions. In 1944 the museum was renamed the Kaunas State M K Čiurlionis Museum of Art. It reopened to the public in 1947.
