- Scope and content:
- The collection contains documents of the Riga branch of the society “Machane Jisroel”. It includes charters, minutes of meetings, appeals, lists of members of the board, correspondence with the Riga Prefecture and the Press Department about the organisation of meetings, lectures and other events. A list of departments of the society, correspondence with foreign Zionist organisations, correspondence with the chairmen of departments of society, an alphabetical index of addresses of members of society, and cash books are also included. According to the organisation’s charter, the aim of the society is to strengthen the religious observance of Jews, and to promote the spiritual and material well-being of Latvian Jews. The society held cultural and educational events, promoted the religious education of children and youth, was engaged in charity work, and contributed to emigration to Palestine. The protocol of the meeting of the society on 25 December 1938 states that the Machane Jisroel Society now consists of 426 members, including 152 members from Riga, the rest from other cities in Latvia including Daugavpils, Aizpute, Dobele, Gostini, Jaunelgava, Jekabpils, Krustpils, Livani, Karsava, Liepaja, Abrene, and Zilupe. Based on these documents, it is possible to study the history of religious education and the Jewish political movement in Latvia.

- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Machane Jisroel Society became the successor of the political party Agudat Israel in Latvia. The goal of this party was to preserve the religious principles and traditions of Jewish society. The party was abolished in January 1935 (like all political parties after Ulmanis’s coup d'état in 1934). The Machane Jisroel Society operated from March 1936 to August 1940, when it was closed by the Soviet authorities.
