The collection contains documents of the Riga City Jewish Gymnasium. It includes orders, regulations, circulars of the Riga School Board and the Jewish Department of the Latvian Ministry of Education, correspondence on the work of the school, the composition of pupils and the payment of teachers for the years 1921-1940. The collection also contains minutes of meetings of the pedagogical council and minutes of conferences, lists of teachers, certificates of teachers and other educational documents, lists of students, characteristics of graduates, copies of certificates, certificates of completion of primary school, annual marks, school report cards for 1933-1940 for both girls’ and boys’ classes, Hebrew and Yiddish classes.
These documents are useful for studying the history of education in a Jewish secular school in Latvia. Students of the gymnasium were taught Jewish literature, Jewish history, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, Latvian, German, mathematics, environmental studies, philosophy, and law. In these documents one can find important information about gymnasium students. For example, in the student evaluations for the years 1935-1939 one can learn about the interests of each student, their abilities and character traits as well as the student's address and some background information on their family. In another example, the minutes of the school board meeting indicate the reason why some students were exempted from paying tuition fees: "father died", "big family, father has a small salary", "mother is in serious condition".

The Jewish Riga City Gymnasium opened in 1919 for children who had graduated from 6 years of basic schooling. The gymnasium lasted 4 years. During the first two years, 1919-1920, students were taught in Russian; in the following years in Yiddish. It was a secular Jewish school, but after the coup of Ulmanis in 1934, the secular school was closed and the religious school remained with the same name.
This school was attended by many famous Jewish public figures, scientists and artists.
