The materials shed light on organisational issues that the society faced in Latvia in the early 20s and reflects its ideology. For example, the materials of the collection contain a Yiddish overview on the situation of a new female worker after the October Revolution of 1917 (inventory 1, file 3). Protocols of the commission on the distribution of items sent from America (1922) and members’ lists of health maintenance organisations of the industrial enterprises’ trade union (1927-1929) are also found in the collection.
- Archival history:
- The former reference number of the Riga "Arbeiterheim" collection in the Central State Archive of the Latvian SSR was f. 832.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1920 the left Jewish society “Arbeiterheim” was established in Riga. It was affiliated with the Latvian Communist Party. The society opened its branches in many Latvian cities and became the centre of legal activities of the Jewish section of the Latvian Communist Party. As a result of accusations that the society was hostile to the Latvian state and sympathetic to Soviet Russia, it was banned by the Latvian government in 1923. The main activities of the society were to support the development of Jewish culture and to encourage agitation among Jewish workers.
