- Scope and content:
- The collection contains papers of the “Keren-Kayemeth”, the Jewish National Fund in Latvia, from 1925-1940 including: the society's charters (1939-1940), minutes of meetings of their members and of the central board, membership cards, donation cards, lists of donors, salary schedules, cashbooks, members lists including representatives of local branches and members of the central board. The collection also includes documents on economic development in Eretz Israel, and on Zionist policy. The practical activities of the society in Latvia can be seen through the society’s instructions and of their magazine (inventory 1, file 5). An important part of the collection is the organisation's correspondence with local branches in different cities of Latvia and abroad, with departments of the society, with other Jewish organisations, and with Riga authorities. The correspondence includes inter alia: issues of collecting donations, on activities in Riga and other cities, on publication of the society’s magazine (inventory 1, file 7) and on holding of events in Riga (such as meetings, evenings and etc.). The collection includes documents of the local branches (lists of members of the local branches and of the local boards). Thanks to the Zionists’ lectures at the meeting in Zurich and the Riga branch’s posters of meetings, evenings and other events having been preserved it is possible to study KKL's cultural and propaganda activities.
- Archival history:
- After World War II materials from the interwar period, along with pre-revolutionary materials, were part of the Central State Archive of the Latvian SSR.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- During the interwar period Riga became the heart of the Zionist movement in Eastern Europe. In 1926 the Zionist society Jewish National Fund "Keren-Kayemeth" was established in Riga. It was part of the International Jewish National Fund "Keren-Kayemeth" established in 1901 in accordance with the decision of the Fifth Zionist Congress held in Basel. Among the society's main goals in Latvia was preparing qualified personnel to promote Aliyah from Latvia. In July 1940, after the Soviet takeover of Latvia, the society was closed.
