- Scope and content:
- The collection consists of the Rezhitsa (Rezekne) Magistrate’s records reflecting various aspects of the city's life from the 1830s to the 1860s. Among the many Jewish-related materials in the collection are documents attesting to the integration of Jews in economic and daily life in Rezhitsa. These are mainly files relating to the claiming of debts from Jews or by Jews from the 1850s. Several files from 1850s and 1860s relate to the ownership of houses, rights to own houses, and entry into force of succession. Jewish-related papers can be also found in the judicial documents of the Rezhitsa Magistrate. These are mainly allegations of thefts in which Jews appeared as accused or victims. In some of these papers in the collection, Jews are accused of evading recruitment to the Russian army. In a case from 1860 Jewish deserters are accused in the murder of a nobleman (inventory 1, file 208). In another file from 1865, Abram Veksler is accused of smuggling (inventory 1, file 289).

- Many of the records originating in the Latgalian area of Vitebsk governorate were originally consolidated in Vitebsk and Vilnius, and later in Mogilev and Minsk. During the interwar and Soviet periods, many local records from Latgalia, including Rezhitsa (Rezekne), were brought to Riga. After the World War II these records were consolidated in the Central State Archive of the Latvian SSR.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- During the Tsarist period, magistrates (municipal authorities) were a judicial and administrative elected institution in the cities. They were responsible for the whole range of judicial, administrative, economic and social municipal issues, but their jurisdiction extended only to merchants and burghers (mieszczanie). After the abolition of the magistrates in 1866 their administrative and economic functions were transferred to the district courts of municipal dumas.
