- The collection of the gymnasium of Akhaltsikhe mostly includes materials of administrative nature, such as materials on the reorganisation of the local pro-gymnasium into a gymnasium, lists of students and of teaching and other staff, enrolment application papers. Several files include data on educational programs, exams. grades etc. The Jewish-related materials of the collection include regulations on the admission of Jewish students, and data on Jewish students included in enrolment papers, students lists and administrative reports on the gymnasium's activities.

- The materials of the collection were transferred to the State Historical Archive of Georgia, the predecessor of the contemporary Central Historical Archive, in 1942

- In late Imperial Russia, gymnasiums (Гимназии) were the most dominant form of general secondary school. They gave a general humanistic and basic scientific education and opened their graduates a path to enrolment in a university. The Men's Gymnasium of Akhaltsikhe was established as a four-year pro-gymnasium and in 1917 was reorganised into a full gymnasium. It functioned until 1921.
