The Jewish-related materials of the collection are predominantly related to issues of settlement and military conscription. Papers from 1859, 1861 and later years mention Jewish merchants wishing to be officially registered in Tbilisi, Erevan and other localities in the Caucasus Region; several files include requests listed by Jews belonging to the estate of city dwellers (meshchane), wishing to settle in different localities in the Caucasus. The registering of children (including adopted children) in their parents' households and other registration issues are also reflected in the collections' documents. Materials related to military conscription of Jews include regulations concerning the punishment of Jews evading conscription (1852), records on fines imposed on Jewish families that were allegedly involved in conscription avoidance (1889), regulations on the rights of Jewish soldiers (1899) etc. Other files include a mention a Jew who fled from Russia to Persia (1815); listing of the Jews' trading rights in Batumi, Poti, Sukhumi, Tbilisi (1877, 1881); data on cases of Jewish conversion to Christianity (1903, 1904, 1911 and other years) and reconversion to Judaism (1914); papers on tax relief granted to Jewish traders who suffered losses during the Revolution of 1905 (1911).
- Archival history:
- In the 1920s the materials of the Russian administration in Tbilisi were transferred to the newly established Main Historical Archive of Georgia. In 1939 this archive became part of the Central State Historical Archive of Georgia, the predecessor of the contemporary Central Historical Archive.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Treasury Chambers were firstly established in the Russian Empire 1775 as bodies of provincial government, responsible for the governorates' financial activities, for the central governments' assets in the governorates, and for building and construction works. In the nineteenth century the field of responsibility of the Treasury Chambers was considerably narrowed, to include the supervision of the Governorates incomes and expenditures, and certain other issues related to finance and taxation. The Treasury Chambers existed until after the revolutions of 1917. ¶ The Treasury Chamber of Tbilisi was initially established in 1802 as the Treasury Expedition of the Chief Georgian Government. In 1840 it was renamed as the Treasury Chamber of Georgia-Imeretia, and from 1847 to 1918 it was called the Treasury Chamber of Tbilisi.
