The collection of religious organisations in Latvia includes a section containing materials from several Jewish communities dating from the pre-revolutionary period and from the period of pre-World War II Latvian independence. The materials cover various aspects of communal life: administrative, social and religious.
Materials from the Tsarist period include an 1807 resolution of the community board of Tukum on taxation issues and mid-1830s papers from the community of Bauska concerning the community's expenses during a campaign of recruitment to the Russian army. Papers from the 1900s mention building a Jewish prayer house in Riga.
Materials from the interwar period originate from the Jewish communities of Tukum, Talsi and Rezekne. The materials from Talsi include data on handling civil records, including several lists of names and vital statistics; the community's correspondence with the Lithuanian authorities and Jewish organisations on administrative and social issues; minutes and other papers of the community council; and papers of the local synagogue board.
The materials from Tukums include data on handling of civil records, including lists of names and vital statistics, along with lists of the community's correspondence.
The files from Rezekne include papers from the local Jewish community, including administrative correspondence, and papers from local synagogue boards (photographs of the synagogues' exteriors are included).
- Archival history:
- After World War I and the establishment of an independent Latvia the archival materials of the Tsarist administration were consolidated in the newly established Latvian state archive that existed throughout the interwar period and after the Soviet takeover of Latvia. Materials from the interwar period were also kept in this archive. In 1962 the materials originating from the pre-Soviet period were deposited in the Central State Historical Archive of the Latvian SSR, predecessor of the current State Historical Archive.
- System of arrangement:
- The Jewish-related materials comprise the collection's inventory 6.
