The collection comprises the papers of the Jewish student society Hashmonea, which existed in Riga between 1922 and 1940.
Several files include the society's administrative papers, including statutes, protocols from the meetings of the general assembly and lists of the members of the society's governing board and revision commission.
Other files contain correspondence between the society and various Jewish organisations, including Jewish student organizations in Latvia and abroad. This correspondence includes invitations to various events in Riga and in other localities, greetings for various occasions and letters relating to social activities (such as correspondence between Hashmonea and a local Jewish aid society on collection of donations). Correspondence with the local authorities in Riga on the approval of concerts, lectures and other public activities held by the society can also be found in the collection.
Several files include documents relating to other student organisations, including a 1928 account on the activities of Hashmonea in Estonia, Latvia and Poland and various materials, including correspondence and lists of members, relating to the Jewish student society Vetulia of Riga.
- Archival history:
- After World War II the materials from the interwar period, along with earlier materials, were kept in the Central State Archive of the Latvian SSR. In 1962 the materials originating from the pre-Soviet period were deposited in the Central State Historical Archive of the Latvian SSR, predecessor of the current State Historical Archive.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- From the second half of the 1920s and in the 1930s Hashmonea was one of the largest Jewish student societies in Riga. It was established in 1922 and shortly afterwards adopted a Zionist-revisionist orientation under the direct influence of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, who was granted honorary membership of the society and dedicated a poem and article to it in the Paris-based Zionist weekly Rassvet. Hashmonea served as an important hub of cultural and social activities and held lectures, balls and political discussions. Together with other student organisations in Riga, it was liquidated after the Soviet takeover of Latvia.
